A University Degree is a Good Investment Essay - 2257 Words

As a recent high school graduate, I spent the last year of high school deciding what I want to do with my life. It was time to seriously answer the question â€Å"what do you want to be when you grow up?† As a child this question seems so broad and open. There are a million things to choose from. One day I could’ve been a teacher, and the next day a veterinarian. But one thing you don’t hear most kids say they dream about being is a college graduate. However, when the time comes to plan your life, suddenly the options diminish and you’re really left with only two; college, or a job. For a long period of time, the majority of high school graduates have chosen college, while the remaining students go directly into the labor force or find†¦show more content†¦Since then thousands of universities have opened and offer many different fields to pursue. From law schools to technical institutes to community colleges, there are a variety of higher educati on options. Since the mass development of universities, it has become more traditional for people of all social statuses to attend college. Also, since 1636 the number of people going to college has also increased as a higher education has become more attainable for the average person. However, in recent times the trend of an increasing enrollment has faded away. This decrease in college registration influences the question of why students have begun to stray away from college in the last few years. Mathew Bidwell, a professor at the Wharton University of Pennsylvania has found that â€Å"About 300,000 fewer students enrolled in college this fall [2013], compared to 2012† (Bidwell 2). This decline in enrollment is something to worry about because the future of the United States falls heavy on the shoulders of education. In 2012 Barrack Obama set a goal for the United States: by the year 2020 America will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. (â€Å"Ensuring† 1.) With the aim of achieving this goal, it is important to stop this decline in college enrollment.
